Danish Cord Weaving
I'm the only specialist Danish cord weaver in Victoria. Most of the work I do is Danish cord re-weaving and restoration — bringing mid-century chairs back to how they were made to sit, using the same material and methods the original makers would have used. I also work with seagrass and other natural cord materials where the chair calls for it.
I work with private clients, architects, interior designers, and furniture makers. If you have a chair with a woven seat that needs attention, get in touch.
Materials
Danish cord is the material I work with most — a 3-ply twisted paper cord, wax-treated, hard-wearing, and available in natural and black. I also work with seagrass and other cord materials depending on the chair and the brief. All cord is sourced from certified suppliers.
Restoration & Re‑weaving
Most chairs that come to me are worn, sagging, or simply at the end of their cord's life. I assess the existing weave, match the original pattern where possible, and re-weave the seat or back to the chair's original specification.
Minor frame work needed to make a chair weaveable — a loose joint, a cracked rung — is handled as part of the job. If a chair needs significant structural restoration first, I'll tell you before anything else happens.
Patterns
The most common pattern is the standard basket weave — what you'll see on most Møller and Wegner chairs. Other patterns are possible depending on the chair, its geometry, and the original design. I'll advise on what works for your piece.
